Who We Are

Queer Ethiopia (QE) is a community and media platform for Lesbian, Bisexual, Queer, Transgender (LBQT) and gender diverse Ethiopians in Ethiopia and across the diaspora. We bring people together to share experiences, express themselves and see their lives reflected in the stories we tell. Our community shapes how our identities and experiences are represented, on our own terms.

Our Story

Queer Ethiopia began as an underground movement in 2019, responding to a lack of information, representation and community spaces for LBQT and gender diverse Ethiopians. It grew from a need to connect with one another and make room for experiences intentionally excluded from mainstream conversations about Ethiopian life.

Since then, QE has grown into a community and media platform connecting LBQT and gender diverse Ethiopians in Ethiopia and across the diaspora. Through storytelling, research and community building, we share knowledge and explore our identities.

Our work challenges the ways our lives have been overlooked and marginalised. By documenting and sharing our lived experiences, we preserve our stories and build a sense of belonging.

Our Mission

To create spaces where LBQT and gender diverse Ethiopians can connect, express themselves, access knowledge, tell their stories and build community across Ethiopia and the diaspora.

Our Vision

A connected and empowered community where everyone has space to belong and thrive, and where our stories, identities and contributions are recognised as an integral part of Ethiopian society and the global diaspora.

Our Values

Community, belonging, self-expression, dignity and care are at the heart of QE. These values guide how we support one another and represent our experiences.

Our Work

Our work spans storytelling and media, research, community spaces, and health and wellbeing resources. Through these activities, we document our experiences, share knowledge and build connections across Ethiopia and the diaspora.
